Choosing a Bank for your business: how to pick the right one?

There are a lot of things that you have to do when you are starting a business. One of those things is opening a bank account. Because there is so much to do most people don't put as much thought into their bank account as they should. This is actually a pretty important decision so you are going to want to think about it.

The main thing that you are going to want to look at when you are choosing a bank for your business is the fees that are going to be charged. In general businesses make a lot of transactions and the cost of these can really add up if you are not careful. You can get accounts that charge you fees by the transaction or accounts that charge you a flat rate for unlimited transactions and everything in between. Obviously you are going to have to put some thought into how many transactions you are likely to make in order to choose the right account for your business.

One other thing that you are going to want to pay attention to is if there is a benefit of keeping a certain amount of money in your account. Most banks will waive the fees if you maintain a minimum monthly balance. In many cases they will also pay you a higher interest rate. This could be a good way to reduce your banking fees. Obviously this will be based on the fact that you actually can maintain the minimum amount in your account. If you can't this is an irrelevant consideration.

One thing that most business owners never consider but really should is taking the money out of their checking account and opening a higher interest money market account for their business. This will allow them to earn a higher interest rate than they would get by just leaving their money in a checking account that pays little to no interest. This can add up to a lot of money so it is certainly worth looking into. If that is the case you are probably going to want to choose your bank based on the highest money market rates available.

Another important factor is going to be the location of the bank. As a business owner you are likely going to be very busy, the last thing that you want is to have to drive across town to do your banking. You are going to want to choose a bank that is located near to where your business is located. You may want to choose a bank that is located near to where you live if that might be more convenient. The problem with that is that it will become inconvenient if you are going to send your employees to the bank for you. It is generally best to have a bank near your business location.
